We provide independent Medeco locksmith service across Universal City, CA, and West Hollywood Medeco service. The one thing that makes our Medeco work different here is simple: Universal City’s 91608 is almost entirely the Universal Studios Hollywood resort and hillside commercial property, so we service and rekey Medeco master-key systems and tenant cylinders every week, not once a year. If you need a Medeco cylinder rekeyed, a restricted key replaced, or a misaligned storefront deadbolt fixed, call (877) 265-3856.
We’re Tumbler Lock & Key. Our name comes from the internal pins of a lock cylinder, which is a fair summary of how we think about this trade. We carry full Medeco sales & service capability for residential and commercial hardware, and we cover every block of Universal City service area from the theme-park gates to the hillside office suites above the 101. From Kwikset to Medeco, we handle the lock you actually have.
Why Universal City Residents Choose Us for Medeco Service
Medeco is not like a Kwikset or Schlage cylinder. The restricted keyway, the precision pinning, the Biaxial geometry on the Classic line, the M3 slider – these are mechanisms you need to have worked on before, on a bench, with the actual cylinder in your hand. We do that work every week. Noel Cardenas, our owner, learned the trade hands-on through Fresno City College’s vocational program, and one instructor’s comment stuck with him for three decades: a good locksmith understands the lock better than the person who bought it. That’s the standard we hold for every Medeco job in Universal City.
We’re an independent shop, which matters. We are not Medeco-authorized and we don’t claim to be. What we are is a bench-level service provider that stocks genuine Medeco cylinders, keys, and restricted-key blanks, and uses quality aftermarket hardware for the door-side components like strikes and reinforcements, never cheap clones of the cylinder itself. High-security hardware, handled correctly. That’s the whole job.

Common Medeco Locksmith Problems We Solve in Universal City
- Restricted keyways that bind after heat warps the door. Universal City’s hot, dry, Santa Ana-wind-prone climate bakes storefront doors above the 101 until the frame shifts and the bolt throws out of alignment. The Medeco key then catches halfway in the cylinder and won’t turn cleanly. We realign the door, adjust the strike, and free the pins without replacing a perfectly good cylinder.
- Hillside dust packing into exposed cylinders. Dust off the hillside gets into gate locks and exterior door cylinders, grinding the pins every time a key rotates. The key starts to feel gritty, then stiff, and eventually wears faster than it should. We clean and lubricate Medeco cylinders, replace worn pins where needed, and cut fresh keys so the wear doesn’t spread.
- Lost restricted keys on tenant turnover. This is the big one in Universal City. Medeco’s patented keyway means you can’t walk into a hardware store and copy a key. When a short-term rental guest or office tenant leaves without returning a key, the only safe response is a controlled rekey or cylinder swap. We handle this constantly in the 91608 area.
- Thumbturn spinning without throwing the bolt. This is a worn or sheared tailpiece or cam screw inside a Medeco commercial mortise cylinder, and it’s common on hospitality and tenant doors that see high-cycle use day after day. The fix is internal, not a new lock. We replace the failed tailpiece and return the cylinder to service.
- Master-key schedules that have become tangled. Multi-tenant commercial buildings in Universal City run on Medeco master-key systems, and after a few turnovers or an unplanned rekey, the schedule can get messy. We audit the cylinder map, rekey what needs rekeying, and hand back a clean, documented key hierarchy.
Medeco Service in Universal City: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Universal City’s 91608 ZIP is not a normal neighborhood. It’s the Universal Studios Hollywood resort and the commercial and hospitality properties on the hillside above the 101, plus a thin strip of apartment and condo stock on the fringes. That one fact reshapes what Medeco service means here. In a typical city, we’d spend our days on single-family home lockouts and rekeys. Here, the work is commercial master-key systems, tenant rekeys, and high-turnover short-term rental and office-suite doors, with lockouts and rekey requests clustering around opening and closing hours as the daily wave of tourists and shift workers moves through. There’s also the studio-adjacent security layer to think about. Property managers here don’t just want a lock that works. They want a restricted keyway that they control, with a documented key schedule and cylinders that can be rapidly rekeyed between occupants. That’s exactly where Medeco’s design makes sense, and exactly where a locksmith who doesn’t know Medeco will fumble. The Santa Ana winds and dry heat add a mechanical factor on top: exterior doors warp, bolts misalign, and dust packs into cylinders, which means Medeco cylinders in Universal City need more frequent servicing than the same hardware in a coastal, milder corridor. If you own or manage a commercial property in the 91608 footprint, service your Medeco cylinders seasonally, not just when a key stops turning. The right lock, fitted right, is the whole job.
Medeco Models & Products We Service in Universal City
We service the full Medeco residential and commercial range that we see in Universal City and Medeco in Hollywood: the Medeco Maxum deadbolt, the Medeco M3 cylinder with its patented keyway and slider mechanism, the Medeco Original and Classic Biaxial cylinders, and the Medeco Maxum Pro and commercial mortise cylinders used on storefront and office-suite doors throughout the hillside properties. We stock genuine Medeco replacement cylinders, keys, and restricted-key blanks for the keyways that require factory-controlled duplication, and we keep quality aftermarket strikes, hinges, and reinforcement hardware for the door-side components so we’re not waiting on a shipment when a Universal City storefront needs a same-day repair. On a sound Medeco body, we repair or rekey before we recommend replacement. High Security Locks, Master Key System, and Lock Rekey are core services on this page for a reason.
Medeco Service Pricing in Universal City
Pricing for Medeco service in Universal City depends on the cylinder type, whether we’re rekeying, repairing, or replacing, and how many doors are involved. A straightforward rekey of a Medeco M3 or Classic cylinder typically runs $35 to $85 per cylinder, with the restricted keyway adding to key-cutting costs if the key control card is in play. Replacing a Medeco Maxum deadbolt cylinder or a worn commercial mortise body generally runs $95 to $220 per door, and master-key system work is quoted per door after we audit the existing cylinder map. Here’s a typical Universal City range:
- Medeco cylinder rekey (Classic/M3): $35-$85 per cylinder
- Medeco Maxum deadbolt cylinder replacement: $95-$180 per door
- Medeco commercial mortise cylinder rebuild or swap: $120-$220 per door
- Master-key system rekey (multi-tenant building): $28-$55 per cylinder, plus setup
- Misalignment / strike adjustment on a warped storefront door: $65-$140 per door

FAQs – Medeco Locksmith in Universal City
No, and that’s the point of the restricted keyway. Medeco controls key blanks through authorized channels, so a hardware store can’t duplicate a restricted key. What we can do as an independent Medeco service provider is rekey the cylinder to a fresh restricted key set, which retires every unreturned key at once. For a property turnover in Universal City, that’s almost always the correct move. Call (877) 265-3856 for a rekey estimate.
The hot, dry, Santa Ana-wind-prone climate in Universal City warps exterior doors and throws the bolt out of alignment, so the key catches halfway and requires force. Dust off the hillside packs into the keyway and makes it worse. We fix it by cleaning and lubricating the cylinder, adjusting the strike and hinges to realign the door, and cutting a fresh key if yours is worn. It’s a service call, not a lock replacement, in most cases.
Yes. We design, install, and service Medeco master-key systems for the multi-tenant office suites, hospitality doors, and commercial properties that fill Universal City’s 91608 ZIP. We map the cylinder schedule, pin each cylinder to its level in the hierarchy, and hand over a clean, documented key schedule that property managers can actually work from.
That’s a worn or sheared tailpiece or cam screw inside the Medeco mortise cylinder, a common failure on high-cycle hospitality and tenant doors in Universal City. The internal part that connects the thumbturn to the bolt has failed. We replace the tailpiece and return the same cylinder to service, which costs less than a full lock replacement. Call (877) 265-3856 and we’ll confirm over the phone.
Usually yes, if you’re dealing with constant turnover. The restricted keyway means unreturned or copied keys can’t be silently duplicated at a hardware store, so a Medeco cylinder gives a property manager real key control, something no standard Kwikset or Schlage cylinder does. For a short-term rental or office suite in Universal City, that control is the whole reason to choose Medeco. Call (877) 265-3856 for a flat per-lock quote.
